As the mother of three and grandmother of three, family is everything to me. I have spent my life working hard to provide a good life for my kids, but it hasn’t always been easy. As a young woman I got a job as a school bus dispatcher and worked my way up to be the Director of Professional Development Education with Clark County schools. It was tough, but I never back down from a tough challenge.
In 2008, I was proud to be elected to represent Senate District 5. Now that I am in Carson City, I will keep the promise I made last fall -- that every time I take a vote I’ll ask myself if it will make your family, and mine, proud.
I will always be there for our schools. I spent 30 years working for Clark County schools. I will always make sure our schools have what they need. I will also fight for standards that support teachers and students so kids graduate with the necessary skills they need to compete.
I will expose backroom deals that increase prescription drug prices. I want to require pharmaceutical companies to disclose the amount they pay to doctors and other health professionals for meals, travel and other perks for marketing their products. Why should we pay higher prices so doctors can get free trips?
I will help create new high-paying jobs in Nevada by investing in Nevada's new economy- alternative energy. By investing in Nevada businesses that develop domestic and renewable energy, like solar and wind power, we lower fuel costs and energize Nevada’s economy. And by expanding research at Nevada’s universities, we develop additional alternative energy options and generate a new energy economy here in Nevada. Now that I serve on the Senate Energy, Infrastructure, and Transportation Committee, I will make this my top priority.
I will make sure our children are as safe at school and in the playground as they are at home. It’s hard to comprehend how someone could hurt a child. As your State Senator, I will resist any and every effort to allow guns in the classroom- there are better ways to deal with school violence. All children deserve to be safe. I have been on the front lines of that fight for many years. As your State Senator, I will make that one of my top priorities.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to hearing from you and building a better Nevada together.
